The 73rd Regiment came to Australia with Governor Lachlan Macquarie
The 1st Battalion of the 73rd Regiment landed in Sydney on 1 January 1810 and took over duties from the New South Wales Corps (102nd. Regiment). It was thus the first of many British line regiments that garrisoned New South Wales for the next sixty years.
Corporal W Morrow’s kit box is of simple construction with dovetailed joins and demonstrates the use of hand forged nails, handles and straps.
No use of screws.
Early Flame cedar.

This large early box features spectacular graining and colour. One continuous slab of cedar cut to show continuous flow of grain on front, top and sides.
Dovetail construction and a simple fitted interior with a secret compartment.
Wonderful aged colour and patina.

Well-constructed with book matched panels to the top short drawers and the sides of the chest.
All original brass fittings.
Drawers slide smoothly. Good graining, patina and colour.

Cedar campaign chests are not common, particularly in full cedar and retaining original brass wear.

Twin pedestal cedar sideboard by Joseph Sly C1835-45
Superbly figured dense cedar.
Original polish.
Design based on a Loudon pattern.
Back with crisply carved foliate ends.
The top is cross-banded.
Under the top are three ribbon grained, cushion shaped,drawers sitting on twin pedestals.
The pedestals have applied fiddle back cedar panels with matching carved foliate tops.
Original cellarette in one end.
Cleaned and waxed.
Bearing two impressed stamps-- J.Sly-- to the back.
This piece would most likely have come from the earliest workshop of Joseph Sly in Pitt St Sydney.
Sly was a prominent, skilled craftsman and his work was highly regarded.
This beautiful, early piece of Australiana has been in the one Merewether family for generations.

COLONIAL CEDAR SIDEBOARD
from the workshop of
JOSEPH SLY. C1835-40
Classically inspired backboard featuring paneled sections with superbly figured grain.
Each shelf is supported by individually shaped supports which appear to resemble (in the mind’s eye) a Kangaroo with joey on the lower shelf and Dolphins on the upper shelf.
Stunning cuts of Cedar are highlighted. The chatoyance displayed in this piece is amazing and beautiful.
The cupboard base consists of two doors with double escutcheons which enclose one interior shelf.
This piece would most likely have come from the earliest workshop of Joseph Sly in Pitt St Sydney.
Sly was a prominent, skilled craftsman and his work was highly regarded.
It is highly collectable, particularly with two impressed Sly marks -one on the top and one on the bottom of this piece.
It shows wonderful C19th patina having been cleaned and waxed.
This beautiful, early piece of Australiana comes from the estate of Dr F. Sulling,
a World War 1 doctor, who on return from service, set up practice in High St. Maitland, Passed down by descent.

The top glazed section features a pelmet,carved corbels top and bottom.
It has three original shelves with original green leather braiding to the front edge of each shelf.
The bottom section of the bookcase features two fully rounded and turned columns either side of two arched panelled doors highlighting beautifully grained Cedar.
There are two rounded upper drawers in the bottom section and one internal shelf.

19TH CENTURY PATINA.
Probably South Australian origin.
Exhibits alternate cross banding of Huon Pine and Cedar.
Flat pilasters of Huon Pine either side of lower doors.
Applied shields of Birds Eye Huon Pine to lower doors.
Pencil signature inside top of pelmet.
This signature appears to say -
"J . W. Penney " in flourishing manuscript.
